The Five new pillars of Marseille's gastronomy

Marseille continues to invent restaurants that match the city: from the crackling wood fire to the comforting ramen, through the 'resto-doudou' and the anti-inflation canteen, here are five spots where you can go when you want to eat good food, without fuss
Bercail – heat machine
In the district of Saint-Lambert, Bercail puts the coal back at the center of the game: wood-fired oven preserved from the previous pizzeria, strongly Mediterranean dishes, due to chef Aurélien Baron, previously working at the Epicerie l'Idéal, and this rare feeling of being received like at home, inn way but with a little more panache. Socca (small galette of chickpeas, the specialty of Nissard cuisine) is always part of the menu to start with but for the rest, one must follow Aurélien’s inspirations.

Annette – the restaurant for childhood memories
Here, childhood is not a veneered decor: it is an assumed, playful, sometimes downright regressive thread (in the good way). Cordon bleu, macedonia "revisited", Pimp’s house... All served in an atmosphere 'madeleine de Proust' facing the Opera, with toys and kids books everywhere, including for the menu pasted in a copy of Tom Tom & Nana.

Davaï – the anti-inflation canteen
Davaï is pushing a model that risks multiplying: a creative, truly homemade cuisine, at the right price, nice dishes billed from 10 euros, and an "autonomous" service. Here, you go get your decanter, your cutlery, you rotate the place.

Bonnies – PMU spirit
A Scottish chef who spent time in Livingston (Megan Moore), a French pub kept in its juice, an ultra lively PMU vibe: Bonnies is one of those places where we both drink coffee and eat a dish of the day perfectly sent (and we’re not talking about this tart crème brûlée that still obsesses us)... Counter, billiards in a room hidden behind, small plates in the evening, simple and effective lunch: it’s popular, sharp without saying it, and perfect for bands as well as solos.

Tampopo – the ramen that suits everyone
We don’t usually go back to the same restaurants to continue exploring Marseille’s culinary scene, and yet, we’ve been snacking at Tampopo six or seven times. A ramen plan in Noailles, carried by the Franco-Belgian chef Larry Sepulcre who made Japan his obsession (he was trained on site as well as at Kodawari’s in Paris): deep broth, wheat noodles that reassure and a room created with his hands, with boat drops and a counter where we love to order Japanese beer on tap, which is rare in the city. No reservation, you have to come early.
